It’s been so long since I reviewed Food Wars! But with episode four it was easy to get back into the anime. One thing I did not know, was that the Japanese voice actor IMG-2034Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, who does the voice of Soma; also does the voices of Sword Art Online’s Kirito, and Lubbock from Akame Ga Kill. I knew Soma’s voice sounded familiar, but I wasn’t sure where I heard it from.

Sacred Mother of Kyokusei starts off with Soma walking to the dormitory he is supposed to stay in. He complains about how big the school is, and the sun is starting to set. He’s exhausted and hungry.  Soma notes how big and lavish the school is, and hopes that the dormitory is lavish as well. When he arrives at Kyokusei dormitory, it is a dark buildingIMG-2036 covered with ivy and there are crows all around it.

Soma enters the building and he is greeted by a dark room and not a soul around. Smoke comes from the upstairs hallway, and then Soma thinks it’s an earthquake…but it turns out a student keeps wild animals in her dorm room.

An old woman appears and introduces herself to Soma. Her name is Fumio Daimado and IMG-2040she is the supervisor for the dormitory. She tells Soma the only way he will be able to stay at Kyokusei is to make one dish, and that dish has to have an acceptable taste. The supervisor will do the judging, but the students can bring any ingredient. Now, no one ever told this to Soma, and he has no ingredients to make anything with.

Fumio tells him he basically lost, but she tells him that they do have leftover ingredients, and Soma takes that challenge to make his meal. She watches him cook , and wonders how he was able to come up with a “Hamburg steak”. Soma used canned mackerel to make a “mackerel-burg steak.” He calls it the “Use What You’ve Got” special, and it’s a IMG-2044success! But when Fumio bites into his food, she has a flashback of her childhood, and it’s not known if it is her first kiss or not, but nevertheless, she was trying to kiss the boy in her dream, and she snaps back into reality, and she’s actually trying to kiss Soma.

Soma is welcomed into the dormitory, and the first thing he wants is a bath. Fumio forgets to tell him it was the girls’ time in the bath and he ends up walking in on Megumi. Soma finally gets settled into his dorm room, and IMG-2046thinks back on his home. He thinks to himself that it was his first time away from home in fifteen years, and the room he is in is quiet. So to me, that sounds like he is completely used to being in a loud area and not so much in quiet surroundings.

He lays back on his bed and suddenly a face appears from the ceiling, startling Soma. The guy doesn’t even introduce himself yet; he just tells Soma that there is a welcome party for him. Soma discovers he is in the same dorm as Megumi, who in the beginning of the episode, thought to herself that she was happy he wasn’t there.

Soma is able to meet the other students in the dormitory: Satoshi Isshiki, who happens toIMG-2052 be the one that peeked out from the ceiling tile, Ryoko Sakaki, Zenji Marui, Shun Ibusaki, Yuki Yoshino, Daigo Aoki, and Shoji Sato. The only one he actually knew before was Megumi. Megumi was impressed that Soma was able to pass Fumio’s test on making a meal in one go. She tells him not everyone could do that. Soma asks her how she did, and Megumi said “so-so.”

But she keeps the truth hidden away, not wanting Soma to know how bad she actually did. It took her three months to finally get in. Soma finds himself in a dormitory full of weirdos. Which is actually kind of true. Satoshi will cook food with no clothes on, apart from an apron. Yuki has animals in her room, Daigo and Shoji tend to fight, and so on.

It reaches the end of the episode when Satoshi and Soma have a cook off when everyone else is passed out asleep. Soma also finds out that Satoshi is the seventh seat of the Council of Ten. Which will be discussed with the next episode review.  There was some amusing elements in this episode, especially with Fumio and Soma…and the whole thing with Satoshi and his apron. I’m looking forward to watching more episodes. Stay tuned for episode five review!
