Emontoys just released a Gurren Lagann figure of Kamina at the end of October in Japan. I had preordered it, as I had been looking around Amazon for a Kamina figure. Seeing the only one that was available was priced over four hundred dollars, the decision was made to take a look on eBay, where I have been so fortunate to finding rare anime things. I found Emontoys Kamina on there, and the seller was quick to tell me it was a pre-order and Kamina was being released by the end of October. The price was excellent compared to the one on Amazon, so I instantly bought it. As you may see from this picture, there are no regrets whatsoever.

To anyone that doesn’t know who Kamina is; he is a very vocal character in Gurren Lagann, and is pretty much a brother to the leading character Simon. He teaches Simon things and well….Kamina has a tragic fate, pretty much because of his pride, and…well, stupidity. He acts on things without stopping to think about it and what it could possibly do to those around him.

Kamina comes pretty much in one piece; the accessories include his popular sunglasses, two different swords, a huge base to stand him on and last but not least, his cape. I have always been extremely happy with the figures I have gotten. Apart from the one. But Kamina…wow. It’s the most impressive figure I have gotten yet. He is slightly smaller than Jotaro, but the details might have Jotaro beat.

The facial expression is a very typical Kamina look, including the eyebrow raise and smile. His tattoos are spot on and his muscles are nicely defined. The flow of the cape is amazing. So much so, when you look at it, it in a way looks like it is really flowing. The cape is easily removable, as is the glasses. He comes with two different swords and they easily fit into his hand. The figure comes with an extra pair of glasses in case of accidental misplacement, or complete loss of a pair. Since this figure was the most expensive, you can actually see the difference between the details of Kamina and the other figures. Not saying the others are bad, because to be honest they are all detailed nicely. He isn’t a posable figure, but the details are enough to make Kamina a pricier one.

The release of the Kamina figure makes me wonder if it was due to being the ten-year anniversary of Gurren Lagann. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case though. The size of the figure actually took me by surprise. Photos don’t always do merchandise justice.

It’s really amazing on how all of these companies that create anime figures (and even comic book character figures) can do an incredible job with sculpting bodies, heads and hair. The detailing they do varies on the company, but like artists, their styles will differ.  The lesson that is learned while collecting anime figures, is that McFarlane should avoid making those kind of figures, and let Bandai, etc handle the them. Although…I have to say it would be awesome if Funko’s Pop! Figures could create one of the Gurren Lagann crew.

This Kamina figure definitely is a five-star rating, and if someone who doesn’t have a Kamina figure and has been searching all over the place, try eBay before Amazon. The prices are better, and the sellers are very good at responding quickly to any questions.
