I picked up a new manga series the other day called Maiden of the Needle. I wasn’t sure what it was about but when I looked at the backstory, it seemed quite good. The beginning reminds me of My Happy Marriage, where the main character is treated horribly by her parents. In this instance, the character’s name is Yui Nuir. Although similar to the character in My Happy Marriage in some ways, Yui is also different in the fact that she had a previous life in Japan and died at the age of 18.

Yui has a special gift with bless weaving as a seamstress, but we find out later after she is rescued by a man named Rodin Calostira that she had kept it hidden due to her abuse by her family. It is then discovered that she has the ability called “Faysight”, in which she can see fairies. These fairies help her with her sewing, making everything look elegant, and fitting perfectly.

Rodin notices how abused and malnourished Yui is, and reassures her that she would not be treated horribly at his household. He makes sure that she is given food, proper clothing and a bath, and let’s her know if she needs anything, all she has to do is ask.

Soon it is discovered that the Nuir household was knocked down to fourth rank, while Rodin’s moved up to second rank. The Nuir household is running behind on orders, and Yui’s father reveals that the household has a pact with spiders, and uses the spiders’ powers to bless weave. The only way the pact is void is if someone in the household marries and changes their last name and the spider becomes a human-devouring beast.

Yui’s Faysight is discovered by Rodin and the former king, Argit Lomestometlo when Yui says to Argit that his clothes are a travesty and she wants to fix them right away. She is informed that his fabric is not able to be cut, but the fairies are able to cut through the fabric. Also, that the clothing was made by her father.

Yui gets to work on the fabric and all these fairies appear, helping her make Argit’s new clothing. It is obvious to Rodin and Argit that because of Yui’s gift, she can’t be left alone, and her life could be in danger. Argit explains that many people may want to exploit her ability, and especially from House Nuir, who would want her back if they found out what she can do.

Argit comes up with a plan, and that is to make Yui his wife.

This is a good series, and a very enjoyable read. It’s full of emotion, leaving you feeling bad for Yui right from the start, and wanting something bad to happen with the rest of her family. The characters are likeable, except for of course, the House Nuir characters. Yui’s sister is a spoiled brat and wanted nothing to do with her once Yui’s father disowned her. We’ll see more of her sister’s bad side in Volume 2.

I definitely recommend giving this series a try. It is worth it.
