Wolf Girl and Black Prince is an anime series that came out several years ago and now the manga is finally being released. Volume 6 was just released in the beginning of March so there’s a lot to review.

Wolf Girl and Black Prince is not your typical shoujo/romance series. It can be quite dark, as Kyoya Sata, Erika’s “fake” boyfriend, is extremely sadistic. Ericka has two friends that always brag about their boyfriends, and she finally gets sick of hearing them. So she takes a picture of Kyoya, and he looks over, catching her doing so. She runs away after doing the “What is that?” move, leaving Kyoya bewildered.

It turns out that Kyoya is a student at Ericka’s school and once he sees her, he is about to say she’s the peeping girl, but she cuts his sentence off and drags him outside. She explains to him the situation and he offers to help her…only if she spins around three times and woofs. She does this after he threatens to tell people about her little lie. He ends up being this super sadistic guy and you can tell Ericka is wondering what did she get herself into. All she had heard was that the guy was a real life prince and was hot.

It does seem over time that Kyoya seems to be warming up to Ericka, although just when Ericka thinks there’s a change in him, Kyoya will get snarky with her. But he does stick up for her when she had told her friends that he was into bondage- they get nosy and start asking him things- so he grabs one her friends face and asks if she would like to try it. Obviously she doesn’t and after that little scene, they shut up. Kyoya takes Ericka by the hand and leads her away from her friends.

Kyoya had made it clear that he did not want Ericka to “wag her tail” to any other guy, despite the fact his old friend had asked her out on a date. Ericka goes, not knowing the guy was just using her as a way of getting back at Kyoya, who apparently had stolen his girlfriend. When his friend finds out Ericka and Kyoya aren’t really dating, he tells Ericka that he can’t stand girls like her. When Kyoya hears him insult her, he punches him in the face, knocking him down on the ground. He explains that if someone hurts Ericka, he’ll protect her.

In my opinion, I don’t think Kyoya knows anything about romance and how to treat women, and that’s one of the reasons he treats Ericka the way he does.

But we find out towards the end of the volume that Kyoya doesn’t like certain types of women- which may explain why there were times he was really hostile towards Ericka. He believes at first tha Ericka has ulterior motives when she helps him when he is sick.

Ericka explains to him that you have to welcome kindness from others into your heart or people will end up with a warped personality like his. Kyoya doesn’t like girls that force their kindness towards others, and he realizes that Ericka is not one of those types of girls. So he thanks her for helping him. It’s at the very end that Ericka realizes that she really does like him but she believes that it is a dead-end road, and that they aren’t really dating.

But considering how much Kyoya had changed (even if a little), it may not just be one-sided after all.
