Episode 2
The episode starts off with Yui in her bedroom, and then is startled to see Laito in her room. He wants to bite her, and Ayato suddenly appears. It’s strange in a way, how they are able to get into her room without making a noise at all. Then Reiji shows up to announce they all have to get ready to attend night school and this includes Yui. So with episode two, we get to see a little bit of what they do at night during the week.
Yui rides in the limo with the brothers, and she takes the time to study each one of them, wondering why they were so much different compared to one another. Shu seems to live in his own world, Ayato…now he’s interesting…he can go from moody to …I suppose flirty with Yui. But he can certainly get fired up by the others. Subaru is just a miserable grouch, which Reiji seems to be as well, but he could just be the disciplined, strict brother. Kanato just seems nuts. But at the same time, we learn in the episode that focuses on him…that he is a great singer. Laito, again, seems the most laidback, despite having a continuous thirst for Yui’s blood.
The episode focuses a lot on Yui and Ayato, especially in the beginning when they are at night school. Their class is food prep that started at 7:30 at night, but Ayato has different plans. He takes Yui to the kitchen where he asks her to make takoyaki, which if you don’t know is octopus in balls of dough. It is actually very, very tasty. He manages to
find a way to bite her there, and Reiji surprisingly finds them, causing Ayato to stop.
Ayato manages to bite her again, but this time it’s at the pool. He had admitted that he likes seeing the pain and fear in Yui’s eyes when he’s going to bite her. He complains to her that she shouldn’t defy him. This is when we learn about Ayato’s past.
When he demeans Yui, saying unnecessary things to her, he decides to throw her in the pool. What has this got to do with Ayato’s past? Well, it turns out Yui could not swim. So when she cries out to him to help, and that she can’t swim; he has a flashback of his childhood where he was in the water and began to drown. His mother Cordelia, who will play a significant role in the series as it progresses, turns out to be a completely heartless mother to the brothers that she birthed: Ayato, Laito and Kanato.
Ayato snaps out of it, and jumps into the pool to rescue her. It’s actually difficult to say if him rescuing Yui was one hundred percent for her blood only, or if he genuinely cared about her. In the beginning episode, not one of them cared about her, although Shu’s actions at certain moments, it’s somewhat questionable if he was trying to protect
her, or just keep the others from killing her. Not only does he give her oxygen in the water, but that’s when he decides to bite her again.
Ayato did spend more time with her than anyone else overall, and I think with that time, he and Yui were able to get closer, even if all he wanted was her blood. And all the vampires made a big deal about the taste of her blood, so there is something special about Yui. He gives her a towel and moodily walks away, leaving Yui alone, sitting on the floor.
Towards the end of the episode, we are introduced to the brothers uncle. He also plays a major role throughout the series, but we don’t really see just how much until a few episodes in. But he gives off the vibe that he is one of those characters that you really want to hate. Stay tuned for the review for episode three.
