The title explains itself. There is a lot of confusion circling around the characters, mostly
Subaru, Yusuke and Futo since this episode is strongly focused on those three. The episode begins with the three narrating how they feel for Ema; while Ema regards them as just siblings. However it has been noted it is quite different in the novels and manga.
The beginning of the episode also refreshes the reviewer about the first episode before jumping right into the second episode’s story line. It starts off with a conversation between Ema and Juli, and Juli of course is still not happy with the living conditions and calls her stepbrothers “top-of-the -line males.”
Ema wakes up to see Okyu making breakfast, and he tells her he’s responsible for doing so; asks her to help with the rice as a couple wake up late. Wataru is the first to come down; Yusuke and Subaru come down next, and Yusuke still doesn’t seem to accept the
fact Ema is now their stepsister; she says good morning to him and all he can muster up is hey. Subaru is extremely shy and quiet- he says the same thing and that’s it; literally nothing else is said by him.
The beginning part of the episode seems to revolve around Yusuke and Ema, most likely because they are classmates and are around each other a lot. He thinks to himself how Ema is the first girl he had serious feelings for. He ends up shouting in class because he was in such deep
thought. As a viewer and throughout the series, I really feel bad for Yusuke because he really likes her, and had done so since before the others even knew about Ema.
Ema returns home, and when she thinks no one is home, as it is so empty and quiet; Juli says there is a male around. She discovers Futo sleeping on the couch. Futo wakes up and approaches her. He says she’s cute in a way and then she looks kinda stupid. Because he’s a pop star, his ego is most likely causing a lot of problems in the household. He calls her an idiot when he says she admits she’s stupid, and he leaves. So far he has been my least favorite of the brothers, just because he treats Ema like garbage and thinks he can get away with
because he is famous.
Juli is furious about the whole confrontation, while it doesn’t seem to bother Ema in the least. Ema said she doesn’t feel bad, and that Futo was caught off guard too. Okyu is in the kitchen when Ema comes down and tells him welcome back. He’s caught off guard by THAT, and when he makes a surprised look, ema asks what was wrong. He admits to her that no one has told him that in a very long time and tells her it sounds nice.
Okyu had been planning a birthday party for Subaru, and explains Futo might not be there. Ema finds it so nice to spend a special occasion with family, and Okyu tells her
they don’t usually go through the trouble, but Subaru is turning 20. Ema asks what she can do to help, and she ends up being in charge of Subaru’s birthday cake.
Ema and Juli went shopping for the party and the weight of everything she is carrying causes her to fall down. Juli mentions that if Subaru was there, that he would be able to help. Subaru ends up being behind her and overhears her saying how he is working and training hard. Subaru mutters to himself about how she noticed and ends up hiding because Ema may have heard him. She returns home and finds Louis passed out on the floor. When she wakes him, he calls her by Chii, which confuses her and Juli. He asks if he can change her hairstyle and she says yes. She feels calm and relaxed while
he does her hair.
Futo comes home to see Louis and he sees Ema. He yells at her and then realizes her hair is different. He tells her he didn’t realize how pretty she was and asks if it was alright to forget they were siblings. He then tells her he was kidding and can’t believe she fell for it.
Everyone gathers for Subaru’s birthday cake, and Yusuke says he can’t have any because she put all her effort into making it. This is one thing I like about Yoshimasa Hosoya. He has a full range of emotions in each character he voices. In this instance, you feel bad for him. He obviously thinks highly of Ema, and that whatever she does is wonderful. As in the cake…he thinks because she put in all the effort into it, then it’s too good to eat. Tsubaki taunts him and then tells Ema he could feed
it to her, causing Azsusa to yank him away. Tsubaki comes across as the highly-energetic that likes to have fun while Azsusa tends to be the more quiet-mannered brother.
Meanwhile Subaru is so quiet with his party, it makes you wonder if he’s really appreciating the effort everyone put into his little birthday party. But he is one of those “take-everything-so seriously” characters that deep down inside appreciates things, but doesn’t openly say it.
Ema takes plenty of pictures during the party and tells Juli later on that having family is great. Ema finds out her cell phone is missing so she heads out of her room to go downstairs and overhears Subaru being taunted by Tsubaki. After getting a lectured text by Natsume about taking basketball more seriously. With Tsubaki taunting him, and then getting a rather nasty-sounding text from Natsume it’s no wonder Subaru becomes
irritated and just erupts. He takes it out on Ema calling her a pain, and that it had always been the guys in the house, and then she comes along.
He heads upstairs and sees that Ema had been standing there, hearing every word he had just said. She apologizes and runs off, and Juli talks to her in her room. Her doorbell rings and Ema finds a slightly distraught Subaru at her door. He apologizes to her, saying he never meant to say anything like that, and it was all in the heat of the moment.
Ema accepts his apology, and Subaru had seemingly overworked himself because as he bows to apologize, he trips and collapses, falling on top of Ema. He’s out cold and Tsubaki and Azsusa come up and yank Subaru off of Ema. They came up to check on her and Tsubaki admits he was taunting Subaru too much, and that Subaru never meant what he said. Subaru is still out cold, and they realize it was an accident. But Azsusa and Tsubaki tell Ema they will get Subaru back for her.

Stay tuned for the review of episode three!
