Here we have a hilarious romantic/comedy anime. It’s nicely animated, and the characters are really different from one another. With that, it makes the characters really play off from each other. I definitely recommend this anime, for those who have never seen it before.
The Characters in the anime are:
- Shizuku Mizutani (Main)
- Haru Yoshida (Main)
- Asako Natsume(Supporting)
- Sohei Sasahara(Supporting)
- Chizuru Oshima(Supporting)
- Nagoya (Rooster)
- Kenji Yamaguchi(supporting
- Mabo, Tomio, and Joji (Kenji’s buddies)
- Yuzan Yoshida (Haru’s older brother)
- Mitsuyoshi Misawa aka Micchan (cousin to Haru)
It’s a typical high school anime too, and like other anime with that setting, it’s full of drama and silliness. Shizuku narrates throughout the anime, and she explains the whole
story of meeting Haru. She is one of those really bookworm girls, that doesn’t really care about anything or anyone around her. She is mostly focused on calculus and studying. Because of this, it seems Shizuku really doesn’t communicate well with others, not just Haru. It is annoying at first simply because of the way she treats Haru in the beginning. Of course by the second episode, everything begins to change.
Shizuku is given an errand to bring back Haru Yoshida, who had been suspended for beating someone else. Of course, he hadn’t returned so someone had to go tell him he could come back. The counselor hands Shizuku worksheets for Haru and so she heads off
to find Haru. Shizuku didn’t want to really do it, but she let it be known later on she wanted the study guide as promised.
She goes into an arcade/batting cage and that’s when she meets Micchan, Haru’s cousin. He basically takes care of Haru. She tells Micchan she has worksheets for Haru, and that’s when Haru sees her. He panics and runs off, jumping out of a window. This actually is one of his biggest habits in the series…leaping out windows.
When Shizuku leaves, there’s rustling in the bushes and Haru pounces on her. He asks if she was basically working for the school. She tells him she just brought worksheets over
for him. He realizes it’s similar to that of a friend dropping worksheets off if someone was sick. Haru instantly calls her a friend, and tells her he’ll see her later. He is…personality-wise, completely opposite of Shizuku. He may be a bit awkward with talking to people, but he is at least able to talk to people. Shizuku seems to want no part with every day life and just wants to study.
Shizuku is able to get Haru back to school, and because he’s been gone for a while, he’s a nervous wreck. So here he is, asking Shizuku questions, and then completely embarrassing her on other occasions. But the most amusing part is when Shizuku tells
him she was going to gym, and Haru starts to undress in the classroom. He takes off his belt and his pants fall down. Which then causes quite a reaction from the other classmates. Poor Shizuku; she was pretty much front row center for that.
Shizuku explains how she was always into studying, even when she was really young. She describes a story in which when she was in grade school, the classroom pet rabbit died and she felt no sadness unlike the other students. After that day, she was known as “Dry Ice.”
Haru snatches Shizuku one day as she’s leaving the school and he takes her away, and
tells her he found a dog. Shizu realizes it belongs to someone and they find the owner and give it back. They eat at a burger restaurant, and Haru’s “friends” are talking to him. One of them begins to mooch off of Haru, and Shizu takes in the conversation.
Haru’s friends leave, and Kenji looks at Shizu as he walks by. Shizu seems to not pay any attention to this. After they leave, Shizu makes a comment to Haru about his friends taking money from him. She tells him that she would be happier alone than to have friends like that. This strikes a nerve to Haru, as he dumps his drink all over Shizu and tells her basically that she sucks. Eventually Shizu goes back to Micchan’s, telling him that Haru needs to come back to school or he will be expelled.
So Micchan invites her to bat a few rounds, and as she does that, she hears Haru’s “friends” talking in the main room where Micchan is. She doesn’t like what they are saying, but tries to shake it off by thinking to herself that Haru is an idiot.
As she starts to put things away to leave, she turns around and sees Haru sitting behind her, and it startles her. She doesn’t want to care, but for some reason she goes in and lays it on to the guys, telling them they should respect him more. One of them asks what her problem is and starts to approach her. Haru comes to the rescue by grabbing Mabo’s arm and telling them they should go.
When you look at it, Shizu already seems to be changing…maybe not drastically, but more gradual. Because she gets really bitchy at Haru during the midterm.
For example, since Haru started going back to school, Shizu complains she hasn’t been able to get any studying done. So she goes to a room full of upper-classmen, and realize the kids Haru had beaten up were in that room. Haru comes looking for Shizu, and he notices them, and his anger gets to him and goes lunging after the guys, hitting Shizu in the nose by accident.
Shizu at this point wants to stop “pretending” to be Haru’s friend, which shocks Haru.
But obviously she doesn’t mean it. I feel as a viewer, that with Shizu being a strong bookworm, and doing nothing but studying, that Shizu can’t handle distractions while focusing on her studies. Characters like that usually say things they don’t mean, and then eventually apologize for what they said. This doesn’t just happen in anime, but other types of shows.
When midterms are over, and Shizu makes top of the list, she doesn’t understand why she doesn’t feel as happy as she should be. She goes to see Haru, and they are friends again. There is a scene where Haru is sitting in the library as Shizu again studies, despite the fact that midterms are over with. Haru tells her he doesn’t get it, but he realizes studying is extremely important to Shizu. , and she invites him to dinner by taking him to get monja. So as they head out to eat, Haru glances at her and then kisses her. End Episode 1! Stay tuned for episode two review. It may be just as lengthy.
