Fundoshis’ and boobies galore! That’s pretty much what you see in episode six. So it’s been a while since I posted my review on the last episode of Food Wars! The anime still is able to keep me interested and amused. I still think it’s some sort of “food porn”, IMG-2224but that’s just me. Considering the reactions of characters when they eat certain dishes…well I don’t think I’d be the only one. What I really like about Food Wars!, is that when the characters prepare the meals, they actually discuss what ingredients they used, how long they cook it for, etc.  Let the review commence!

Episode six begins with Soma completely knocked out asleep in his room. There is suddenly a voice coming from somewhere, asking for his help. The voice of course, belongs to Satoshi. Soma tells him that he was up late and still was sleepy, and to IMG-2225find someone else. Later on, Yoshino (Yuki) shows Soma around, explaining how they grow their own ingredients at the school.

When they get to the garden area, Yoshino and Soma are completely shocked as they see Satoshi taking care of the vegetables…in a fundoshi. He tells Soma that knowing how ingredients grow is part of learning how to cook. Megumi is there to help out as well and both Yuki and Soma find her to be a breath of fresh air for Satoshi. She had brought along breakfast for everyone for after tending the garden. After trying the onigiri Megumi made, Soma asks her why she can’t cook like that in class.

IMG-2228Megumi explains to him that she gets some form of stage fright, and her mind goes blank when she’s nervous and she messes up. Afterward Megumi walks around with Soma, and he discovers that there are research societies at the school, which are similar to club activities at a regular school.

They come across an almost abandoned society called the Bowl-Soc, and find one person in the room, and that is Kanichi Konishi, who is distraught about what happened to Bowl-Soc. He goes on to tell Soma how Erina does things; such as suggesting budget cuts or take space away from groups she doesn’t like. There is only one option that Erina forces on people, and that is a food war.

Ikumi Mito comes in with people and making decisions about demolishing the room. She harasses Konishi and tells him that rice bowls are B-class dishes and that, according to IMG-2229Erina, no matter how you try to dress up a rice bowl, they are still considered low-brow. Now Mito is considered a meat master, and that basically means she would be difficult to beat in a food challenge that requires beef. She gets all high and mighty about the ingredients she uses and Soma gets annoyed by that.

He tells her that it is a disgrace if someone gets too happy about how much their ingredients costs. Soma asks Mito if he could do the food challenge with her, and she agrees, and asks if he will leave Tohtsuki if he loses. Of course he accepts, but he makes an agreement as well. If Mito loses, she will have to join Bowl-Soc and contribute to the IMG-2230development of “rice bowl culture”. Erina later believes that this challenge between Mito and Soma is a chance to get him out of the school.

It is three days before the challenge, and Konisihi informs Soma that meat is Mito’s specialty and that Soma should avoid making any plate with meat. He also tells him that all ingredients have to be prepared by the participant and that should have experience in food prep as well.

Since Bowl-Soc has no budget, Soma has to pay for ingredients with his own money, which he finds out is running pretty low as well. He spends all day with Megumi and Konishi to try and make a dish that will top Mitos’ dish. Soma had tried all of Bowl-Soc’s own recipes, which he found interesting in the first place. He even tweaked them a little bit with his own methods. But still, not good enough. So he finally comes up with a new idea and that is to make “Chaliapin Steak” which is a steak only found in Japan.

Will it work? That is revealed in episode seven: The Silent Bowl, the Eloquent Bowl. Stay tuned for the review.
