Wow! After thirteen episodes, I have decided this is one of the best series I have ever seen. Just like Kamigami no Asobi, this series is just way too short. There is so much they could do with the anime. Seriously, though, I didn’t find any episodes boring, or lose interest in. This is a definitely on
my recommendations for anime. Now that I have blogged my reviews on each episode, I can go back and just watch it in general and really pay more attention to all the characters and scenery. But I have a feeling, even though these episodes were amusing and slightly emotional, the four episode OVA will be really sad.
The last episode begins with Hishiro thinking about the fireworks festival that she will be attending with her friends. Kariu texts Hishiro, telling her how she feels about Oga. She mentions that she felt like she took it all for granted, thinking she’d be going to the same
college as Oga. Kariu then asks Hishiro to help make sure that she and Oga will be alone.
Kariu looks so upset, it really makes you feel bad for her. She’s taken down her tough shield and she finally shows a different side of her. It’s kind of a nice break from her yelling and being sulky. The downside is that she’s pretty sad about what is to come in the future. She is filled with doubt that she’ll see Oga again.
Hishiro runs three minutes late to the fireworks festival, which she apologizes for. She has never been to a festival and had underestimated how many people would be there. It turns out she may suffer from claustrophobia.
While walking through and looking at all the booths, An is extremely clingy to Arata, and
mentions getting takoyaki, and Arata tells her to go buy some. Hishiro seems to be limping, and Yoake notices and offers her his arm. So she agrees after making sure it is okay. Hishiro is a combination of socially awkward and trying to be polite. When Yoake offers his arm, she is polite about it and asks…if it’s something else on the other hand, she can just be downright mean.
Arata notices Yoake and Hishiro, and he seems to panic. He wonders if Yoake is hitting on Hishiro, and there is a sense of jealousy building up in Arata. His reaction alone kind of gives off that feeling He tells Yoake that he needs to do something about An, because
she’s being too clingy. Yoake then calls Arata out by telling him he doesn’t like seeing Yoake with Hishiro. . While this is happening, all of them are trying to be as subtle as they can when Oga and Kariu are walking together alone.
Oga and Kariu are alone together and this is the moment Oga blurts out that he loves her, and this completely takes Kariu by surprise. Of course Oga always has bad timing with things, but in the end, Kariu admits to him that she had remembered him thinking about going to another college. She tells him that she had loved him since they were first years. Oga admits to her that he was never good at picking up on things.
Oga opens up at this point, and he acknowledges the fact that Arata gave him that push to say something to Kariu. It seemed like the one moment he realized was when he saw the older guy with Kariu the previous day and he didn’t think it was okay for someone else to touch her. Okay, it has to be said here. Oga is incredibly adorable when he constantly blushes. You can tell he’s very nervous about telling Kariu how he feels; but he was able to tell her that he had loved her for a long time too.
Naturally, An and Yoake decide to push things along between Arata and Hishiro. They end up being separated from the others, and Arata realizes they set him up too. It is clear, anyone can tell, that Arata is conflicted with how he feels about Hishiro, and the
fact that he is only a subject with ReLife. He knows everyone will forget him. Hishiro talks to him, and tells him he makes friends easily, and she noticed that when he enrolled in April, he already had friends. She even asks if he had been friends with Yoake, as she has seen Arata talking to him. Hishiro admits that when she saw him talk to others so easily, she had wanted to try harder, and she was glad she met him.
Talking to Hishiro makes Arata realize his young life will be no more once his ReLIFE experiment is over with. But he does think it was worth it. He wants to take action with Hishiro, but it doesn’t come to fruition. Arata is happy that Hishiro feels the way she
does. Subject 001 is finally revealed in this episode, but it’s probably no surprise really, as there were subtle hints throughout the series.
It’s Hishiro and it makes sense. Her flaws of being socially awkward and ways she looks at people kind of give it away. And the best part of it, is that Arata and Hishiro don’t know the other is part of the ReLIFE experiment. We only find out about Hishiro when she has flashbacks about everything she had experienced at the high school. She realizes the more fun she has with everybody, that it will hurt more when everyone goes their separate ways.
It ends with Arata and Hishiro still being part of ReLIFE at the school, so I have a feeling the OVA will definitely see them leave the project. Yoake is happy with his report, saying Arata has a way of changing those around him. So it’s a positive ending, but it’s also obvious that the series is not completely finished.
