Episode three is actually pretty funny. To be honest, all the episodes have a good amount of humor in it. In this episode we get to see characters have their own struggles. Arata
still is forgetting he is 27 and injures himself not once, but twice, Hishiro is trying to make friends with Kariu and even “smiles” at her, and Kariu is developing jealousy with Oga and Hishiro. The anime has been so far consistent with what real people, especially in schools deal with every day.
Arata and An end up getting worse grades on their tests, and Oga can’t understand why for the most part. He says he isn’t too surprised with Arata. Oga does call out Arata for
talking too much when they were supposed to study. It is in between this and the very beginning of the episode that there are hints of romantic interest between Oga and Kariu.
A lot of the episode features Arata and his friends outside doing sports activities with their class. This definitely is an example of how Arata thinks he is younger than he really is. He first injures his shoulder, and realizes adults need to stretch before doing anything athletic, or they can get badly injured. Yaoke has told him before that he wasn’t as young as the kids he’s making friends with. Arata gets overconfident when he’s running, and he ends up falling and needs to get looked at. Apparently, the injury is censored even on the DVD. I didn’t look to see if you could turn it off, but I never would have thought an anime like this would blur something out like an injury.
This episode also starts revealing Kariu’s problems, but slowly. It’s actually building up
for episode four, which does focus a great deal on Kariu. Ever since Hishiro managed to be top of the class alongside Oga, Kariu has been struggling with that. It doesn’t help that Hishiro tried to be friendly and smile at her, and only ended up creeping Kariu out. It is fairly obvious she has feelings for Oga, but she doesn’t say anything and lets this eat her up inside.
At the end of the episode, it shows Yoake taking notes of everything that had happened that day. He begins looking at two binders labeled Subject 001 and Subject 002. 002 is Arata but we don’t actually know who 001 is, but seeing the notes from Yoake, 001 was a very difficult experiment. There were no significant changes in 001 but 002 (Arata) is having several changes each day. Yoake’s study of Arata seems to speak more positively, rather than negatively. Stay tuned for episode four review.
