Episode two of ReLIFE is just as good as the first episode. This is actually good because usually that means the rest of the series will be enjoyable. At least for the most part. There are series, even those that aren’t anime, that can mislead somebody with a few good episodes and then completely tank. It’s definitely not the case in this instance.
Episode two starts off where episode one ends, in that it’s the next day, and Arata finds out that he completely bombed all areas on his exam. The worst being a four in math. I
can totally relate because math is awful and a natural born enemy to me. The other students that he’s actually become friends with really easily.are shocked how poorly he did. So Oga Kazuomi offers to tutor him and it turns out that An Onoya totally bombed the exams as well. So she asks for tutoring assistance as well.
Meanwhile Kariu has a competition with Hishiro with getting to the top of the class. Apparently it doesn’t do well, as Hishiro ends up being top of the class again. This really,
really irritates Kariu and Oga informs Arata about this whole competition towards Hishiro, which only makes Kariu even more furious.
So Oga says he will also help Onoya, This episode gradually turns towards the socially awkward, but smart girl Chizuru Hishiro. Which there is always one of those types of people in high school, so the anime is pretty accurate on the stereotypical high school
students. Oga, Onoya and Arata end up having lunch together to begin their group study, and that’s when Arata notices Hishiro having problems getting lunch. He ends up helping her, and she appreciates it and thanks him.
Arata finally realizes how different school is compared to the time he went to high school…which is also accurate in real life. When he went to school, cell phones were banned and if you were caught with them, the teachers would take them. But as Arata looked around the cafeteria, all the kids had phones out.
The episode moves on to when Arata goes to the staff room to turn in his apology letter. He bumps into Hishiro and they get to know each other better, well, at least Arata gets to know Hishiro better. She tells him she has never had close friends and it may be due to her looking unapproachable; she doesn’t have a decent smile. Which is always hilarious
to watch because it scares the hell out of Arata. He realizes she’s very socially awkward and wants to be friends. Hishiro asks for his phone, which he assumes she wants to steal it from him, and she ends up clarifying that she wants his number so she can be friends with him.
Arata is reminded later on that even when he becomes friends with the students in class; that none of them, even the teacher will remember him. Because really, the 17 year old Arata doesn’t really exist. But Arata will keep his memories. Stay tuned for the review of episode three!
