Episode two of Food Wars! is actually really enjoyable, and has great scenes in it.  The animation is beautiful, and overall is greatly detailed. The story line of  God’s Tongue actually makes perfect sense on why it is called that.

Erina Nakiri is one of those types of girls that highly annoy people. She definitely has that IMG-0322“holier-than-thou” attitude, and puts down people that cook food for her to try. Unfortunate for Soma, Erina is the one that will be testing the transfer students. Soma has a hard time going to the school for the test. The other students pretty much look at him in disgust, wondering why someone like him is taking the transfer exam. Soma is pretty much the typical average guy, and it is obvious when he walks by all these rich students. When they find out he runs a small restaurant, unlike food chains, and fine dining restaurants, the kids treated him horribly.

But it isn’t until they all see who is going to test them. Erina is well-known for being extremely picky with food, and will insult/upset people right in their face. When the IMG-0337students realize who it is, they basically run from the room and leave. Erina thinks there is no one left, but Soma stayed. The hostility that Erina gives Soma is pretty bad, but she allows him to make her a meal by using eggs.  She watches him like a hawk, and finally asks Soma what he is making. Soma explains it is a meal from his restaurant, and when he shows her the bowl, she thinks it’s plain furikake.

Erina insults him, telling him she’s eaten the finest of foods. Basically suggesting his food IMG-0336is not even close to the other food she’s eaten. Soma actually puts up with her and her opinions. He then tells Erina that it is not just furikake, but “Transforming Furikake.” This raises Erina’s interest in the dish and when she gets closer, she sees the other ingredients make their way through the rice.

She fights with herself about eating it and she finally allows herself to take a bite of the food. Soma makes fun of her as she continues to eat the furikake, instead of the originalIMG-0338 “one bite.” The sexual imagery begins and again, it is so exaggerated, you just have to sit back and laugh. After seeing Erina’s reaction to the “Transforming Furikake”, you would think she would at least be satisfied by Soma’s cooking…but no, she basically failed him and walked away. Plus that wouldn’t be her character at all to easily accept Soma’s dish. While Soma was preparing this meal for Erina, there is a quick scene of someone listening in to the whole meal-making and conversation. It happens to be Senzaemon, Erina’s grandfather. Once Erina and Soma leave, he comes out and begins eating the furikake. It’s because of Senzaemon, Soma is able to attend the school.

If you haven’t seen Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma or had no particular interest in it, I would highly suggest just watching one of two episodes to get a feel of what the series is like. Yes, the anime focuses on food, but there are stories behind all of the characters as well. Besides, this anime is completely different compared to the typical action/adventure, harem/reverse harem anime. So if you are looking for something new to watch, Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma might be up your alley.
